My 5yr old pomeranian barks at everyone except people in our immediate family. How do I get him to stop barking at my friends and anyone else that comes to my house. I dont want to put a barking collar on him, and I highly doubt the Dog Whisperer will come to this small town to help me?
Pomeranians really are like a socialist….they love to socialize, especially when there is a new face around! I have a friend whom I visit once in a while and his Pomeranian really likes to let everyone that he’s glad there’s company in the house!!!! It sounds pretty playful to me. But of course, if he’s growling before he barks, then there is something wrong. Otherwise he’s just socializing…so you could just baby talk him to let him know that he’s right "we have company!" then give him a toy to play with and they will usually calm down.
Have his voice box removed. I know it’s cruel, but you asked the best way. Some people who live in apartment buildings have this done to their dogs so they keep quiet.

A cheap and simple way is to use a shaker can (a soda can with rocks or pennies it in) and shake it or toss it at the dog when they bark. When you shake/toss it, say ‘No, quiet!’ and hopefully you won’t need the can at all, just the command.

Dogs are like people, the smaller the mouthier (more bark). Haven’t ypu ever noticed that small dogs do nothing but yap, yap, yap? Chihuahuas are the worst.

I’ve had five poms in my lifetime. The best way I know of to train them to stop barking is to always have a small toy water gun on your person (in your pocket, hang it around your neck on a string, etc.). Whenever the dog starts barking for no reason or won’t settle down, tell him, "NO!" & pull out your squirt gun & give the little stinker a squirt of water. If you are *consistent*, this will stop the majority of the barking in a short time.
